About Grid Collage
This tool turns any photo into a glitchy, symmetrical strip collage using a manual paper-craft technique, digitized for the web.
How it works:
4-Way Mirror: Your cropped rectangle is mirrored horizontally and vertically into a perfectly symmetrical kaleidoscope image, computed pixel-by-pixel (each mirror pixel is the exact average of four source pixels).
Cut & Rebuild: The mirrored image is sliced into vertical strips on whole-pixel boundaries. These strips are then reassembled from the outside in (left, right, left, right...) and each strip is rotated 90° to become a horizontal row — the canvas transposes for one step, then rotates back. This process is repeated twice to create the final fragmented output at your crop's original aspect.
How to use:
Upload: Drag & drop, click, or paste (Ctrl+V) an image. Any aspect ratio works — the crop picks the region. Or click one of the sample thumbnails below the work area.
Crop: Drag the rectangle to move it, drag the corners to resize it. Double-click to reset. Lock the shape with the preset buttons: 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 2:3, 16:9, 9:16, 1.91:1 (social link images), or Free.
Flip: Use the flip buttons to mirror the source image horizontally or vertically before collaging.
Strips: Use the slider to change the number of strips. Moving the slider updates the preview instantly. (Max strips = smaller crop side / 4px; every cut lands on whole pixels.)
Swipe: On touch screens, swipe left or right on the Final Output image to raise or lower the strip count — the slider follows along. Swipe left = more strips, swipe right = fewer. A plain tap still opens the full-size view.
Enlarge: Clicking the Final Output (or a process step) opens exactly the same pixels you will export, at the selected scale.
Export: Choose PNG, JPG, or WebP. Adjust quality for JPG/WebP. Select 1x, 2x, or 4x scale (higher scales are disabled if the output exceeds 8192px). JPG fills transparent areas with white; Copy always keeps transparency. Files are named like "yourimage-gridcollage_2x.png".
Easter egg: The title runs through the real mirror / cut / rebuild pipeline once when the page loads, at the current strip count. Tap it to replay.
Privacy:
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server. (Loading a remote image via ?img= is a normal inbound fetch from that host, same as viewing it in a page.)
