🔑 Secret Word — most private

EChat creates a random room address on a server you pick and hands you an invite link to share. You share the password separately. Nobody can find the room without the link, and nobody can read it without the password.

🤝 Passphrase — a community chat room

Everyone who types the same phrase lands in the same room — so lots of people can chat together, like a community chat room. Tap 🎲 for 3 random words, or type anything you like. The catch: anyone on Earth who types the same phrase joins too.

EChat = Encrypted Chat. Two ways to meet, both end-to-end encrypted (AES-256-GCM) over ntfy. The relay only ever carries scrambled text.

• 🤝 Passphrase — think of it as a community chat room: everyone who types the same phrase lands in the same room, so lots of people can chat together. Tap 🎲 for 3 random words, or type anything you like. The catch: anyone on Earth who types the same phrase joins too.
• ⚠️ No recovery — if you forget your password or phrase, your messages are gone forever. No reset, no reminder, no back door. That is not a flaw; that is the entire point. Copy it somewhere safe.
• Names in groups — set "your name in this room" and it appears (encrypted) with your messages. Tap any received bubble to reveal who sent it; the colored dot always shows who's who, even anonymously.
• ✓ check — on messages you sent, one check means the relay accepted it. The message then waits in the relay's cache (about 12 hours) and the other person's device picks it up the next time they open EChat. There are no read receipts — a reply is your confirmation.
• Daily limits — relays rate-limit anonymous posting. ntfy.sh allows roughly 250 messages per day per device; other servers may allow more or less. If you run out, start a new chat on a different server.
• History — your device keeps an encrypted copy for 2 days (or 7 days for supporters). The relay only holds messages for about 12 hours, so anything you never received that is older than that can't be pulled. Open regularly to keep a full history.
• Server moves — if the relay for a passphrase room is retired, EChat quietly re-points you to the current one and keeps your local history. You may see a small "relay changed" note; no action is needed.
• Links work — URLs, emails, phones become tappable links.
• Nothing to hack — no accounts, no cloud.

Privacy

All encryption happens locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Messages and history live only on your device (encrypted, 2 days — 7 for supporters) and in the ntfy relay's ~12-hour cache. No accounts, no analytics, no uploads, no read receipts.

Limits

Relays rate-limit anonymous posting — ntfy.sh allows roughly 250 messages per day per device, and mirrors vary. If you hit a limit, start a new chat on a different server.

How encryption works

Keys are derived with PBKDF2 (310k iterations) and messages sealed with AES-256-GCM. Invite links carry only the server, a random topic, and a password check — never the password itself.
